Wordless Wednesday ~ in writing

{I added some new pictures and items to my blog called "Grandma's Diary" which you really must check out. One of them being this pay stub. It left me very speechless as I can imagine it will you. It is a stub of my grandfather's when he was 18 or 19 years old. He worked 78 hours for . . . well, click on it and you'll see for how much pay. 63 years later, it's hard for us to imagine working so hard for so long each week for such little pay, and as an educated person! It makes me respect him even more, and I didn't think I could gain any more respect for a man I already had so so much respect for. Missing you and loving you always, grandpa.}

I found a really cool inflation calculator that says $37.50 in 1945 dollars is equivalent to $437.64 in 2007 dollars. Roughly $5.60 an hour -- not much unless you are working at McDonald's!

Thanks, Michelle! Cool on the conversion chart. And did you notice the 60 cents an hour overtime (10-1/2 hours)?

That is unreal!! Can you imagine supporting a family on $37?? You can't even buy a tank of gas for that!! Sure does make you appreciate everything they did to give you all the opportunities you have huh?! :)

hey..this is cool. I found it funny they called SS 'old age benefit"! and withholding taxes...wow 7.20..now it roughly 422.00 a month of taxes for us on one(1) check!!!!!! and he doesn't get over time being salary...

37.00 was actually good money back then..my mom and dad bought there first house was $7000.00 and they were worried they wouldn't be able to make the 43.00 house payment because they were paying a whopping 29.00 at their apartment. I would be a rich woman it my house payment was only 43.00! Te average house payment today is 1400.00;0

I still would have love to live back then, than now in this crazy world.

Wow! I cannot imagine... I was shocked when I read the first comment, about the then-to-now calculator.
This is really cool, Val!

I think my favorite part is the old age benefit. Wow! And now we don't even know how we are going to pay our retirees, let alone giving an "old age benefit". :)
